Tips for Second-hand shopping

For first-timers, second-hand shopping can be very daunting. The uncertainties, time commitments, and the feeling of wearing "someone else's" clothes can all add to someone's hesitation. But don't worry! As a seasoned lover of second-hand shopping, I'm here to give my best tips and tricks to get you the best second-hand wardrobe.

1. Patience

This is especially important if you are going to charity shops. Be patient!! There are endless racks to sort through, and it can be very frustrating when you don't find anything you like right away. Over the years, I have found that listening to music can really help with this! Create a fun playlist with your favourite upbeat songs to listen to. Also, give yourself many hours to go to the charity shops. Unfortunately, 99% of the time, if you are just popping in, you will not find the dream item you are looking for. Think of charity shopping as a hunt; dedicate a whole afternoon or a whole day to go out there and search!

2. Have no "inspo pics"

Contrary to popular belief, I have found it's best to have no inspiration for items you want to see or styles. This is how you miss the gems! If you are looking for a brown knit jumper. You may just go straight to that section, potentially missing a fantastic green jumper or a perfect pair of jeans! It is great to have some idea, as long as you keep it from giving you tunnel vision and commit to searching the whole shop.

3. Go on a weekday

Charity and vintage shops put out new stock every day. The weekends are flooded with traditional 9-5 job holders, and they may snatch up the best items before you can. The weekdays are the perfect opportunity for less competition and a higher chance of finding that excellent item.

4. Try things on

Yes, there are more hygienic views than this one. However, especially with vintage shopping, standard sizing has dramatically changed over the years. For example, a size 12-14 in the 70s is today's size 8-10. Furthermore, trying it on lets you see the overall fit and how an item may lay on your body type. That said, don't let the number on the tag stop you from trying something on!

5. Donate your own clothes to charity shops

Charity shops rely on frequent donations so don't expect to benefit from this system if you cannot contribute to it! Clear out your wardrobe with the new seasons and help out a good cause.

Happy shopping!
